What We Know

We know that people dream. There have been many studies about when people dream and what they dream about.

The research was done with case studies. They would wake up the subject in a laboratory and ask them questions. What we learned is that most dreaming occurs during REM sleep ( RAPID EYE MOVEMENT)

According to researcher, Calvin Hall (1966), people dream quite a bit about sex, aggression and misfortune. Dreams seem to center on internal conflict...such as being risky or playing it safe. People dream less about public affairs and current events. Typically, dreams are very self-centered. Yes people dream mostly about themselves.

What They Know

Dreams can be explained in a variety of ways. These are three popular theories:

Sigmund Freud (1900) Stressed the Wish Fulfillment of dreams. He analyzed client's dreams in therapy. He thought that people fulfilled ungratified needs from waking hours through wishful thinking. Example: a sexually frustrated person would tend to have highly erotic dreams. Or an unsuccessful person would have dreams of accomplishment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rosalind Cartwright (1977) Emphasized the problem-solving function of dreams. She proposed that dreams provide opportunity to work through everyday problems. According to her, there is considerable continuity between waking and sleeping thought. Those who follow this feel that dreams allow people to engage in creative thinking about problems because dreams are not restrained by logic or realism.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

J.Allan Hobson and Robert McCarly (1977) Assert that dreams are merely a by-product of periodic neural activation. They believe that these are just bursts and activity coming from the subcortial areas of the brain. They argue that dreams are the side-effects of the neural activitvation that produces "Wide Awake" brainwaves during REM sleep. This theory downplays the emotional aspect of the dreamworld.

These are just three theories of at least seven theories. All seven are based more on conjecture than on research.

Still A Mystery!

In part, this is because the private, subjective nature makes it difficult to put dreams into a deeper test. So the purpose of dreaming remains a mystery.

Dear Zabbella,

To know the scientifical analysis of the dream is really precipitating.I am afraid to dream again.

Any way this is really a new information to me about the interrelation of dreams with our wishes.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and thanks for sharing with us.

I had voted this up and interesting.

with warm regards

Dinesh Nair.

Thank you! Years ago, Someone told me that I can control some portion of my dream. It seems to work esp. with nightmares, I can remind myself... within the dream.... that I CAN exit, and that I have control. So far, it has worked for me. Don't be afraid.

There are so many theories out there when it comes to dreams. I have never had the same dream twice like so many people have. But I have been able to control my dreams and nightmares too - I guess if you are not in a deep state you are slightly conscious of what you are thinking. It's fascinating though.

Interesting stuff! I don't think too much about dreams. I just let them happen (if they happen) and I'm always glad to wake up and be back in reality. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for visiting, I think it is fascinating because we really don't know why we dream. I agree with all three theories.

Zabella, First of all thanks for following me.

As far as the hubs content goes,Dream merchants will be interested to read this as they will realise that the dreams they are selling to the public is interpretative and is the result of mismatch of the wishes with the fulfilment in their life.

So if the movie doesn't goes well he will realize his concept is not matching with the peoples dream.

very nice one different from others.

Because tell me one more thing if you know,

Which part of our body make us think. Is it brain or heart. Because if some one says you that they love you, they will keep their hand in the heart and say, you are always in my heart. That means can our heart think or does he knows any thing?

I am happy to vote this interesting.

Thank you for visiting. There is a part of the brain that will LOVE...but because it feels so good, it makes your heart beat just a little harder, it lets you know you are alive! (But it does sound more poetic when you say it's from the heart.)
